End of the Desert Inn - Old Las Vegas Strip Icon

by LV on March 10, 2010

Demolition of the Desert Inn Augusta Tower on October 23, 2001. The Desert Inn closed in 2000 after a 50-year operating history. The Augusta tower shown here was the first implosion which made way for the construction of Wynn Las Vegas. The remaining towers (Palms and St. Andrew) were imploded in November, 2004 to make way for the construction of Wynn Encore. Video clip by Greg Clarke.

I got to stay at the Desert Inn exactly once in the mid-70s. I thought it was a really beautiful and comfortable place; everything you wanted was right there for you. I was sorry to see it go. So many perfectly good hotels in Las Vegas have been knocked down for no better reason than to construct some mega-debt-financed monster that winds being very impersonal.

Oh man I remember this night where I was halfway asleep and all I heard was boom boom boom. Remember this was just a weeks after what happened and my neighbors and myself were so freaked out. Looking back it’s kind of funny now but they did not time this right at all.

Shame! I hate seeing the old ones go! Too bad they couldn’t have made a Las Vegas tourist spot or museum of the old Sands.

This place was one of the most well known in Las Vegas. It also had a lot of people who work there who were there from the beginning to the end. Great Job Welcome back skyraider
